Once a sleepy fishing village, the quaint old town of Benidorm is flanked by great high rise hotels, two of the most immaculately maintained beaches in the whole of Spain and some fantastic theme parks providing entertainment for all the family. With its vast nightlife, Benidorm becomes very lively in high season and is not for the faint-hearted.
Despite this, local culture can still be found with a visit to one of the local markets or by dining in one of the quaint ‘tascas’ and inns found in the old town, although those with a less adventurous palate will never have to look far for familiar British dishes.
Alternatively, close by, Altea offers an escape from the bright lights and party lifestyle. The charming town, just 11 kilometres north of Benidorm, offers medieval cobbled streets, the distinctive church of Altea, a picture book Old Quarter and a delightful palm-fringed seafront esplanade. The town is now geared to the demands of the modern day tourist, but still I retains a bohemian air from its past when it was a centre for musicians, artists and writers.
Nearby Guadalest showcases some stunning regional architecture, while the stylish city of Valencia offers great shopping.
